ONE MONTH PYTHON PROGRAMMING TRAINING
Teenagers living in rural African communities face marginalization in terms of opportunities, because of geographical location, this group of young people sometimes do not get an equal playing field as their counterparts in urban areas. This lack of opportunities is even worse in the education sector. It is for this reason Teens Can Code was birthed, to help young people living in low-income areas access free coding classes. During our Teens Code Conference in Ejigbo, Lagos, on 1st of November 2017, we announced to our participants that we would train up to 50 teenagers on Python programming with support from Python Software Foundation (PSF), and Andela Nigeria's TeenCode Africa. It was received with excitement as over 200 students sent messages to our social media handles in less than 24hours to register their interest for the pogram. This shows that the conference indeed inspired many to take interest intechnology. Students were selected one child per school, some schools got slots for male students and some got slots for female students, this was because we wanted to balance gender and more so, encourage more girls to code.
As promised at the conference, Teens Can Code started the one month training for 56 selected students, comprising of boys and girls. The training started on Friday 17th November to Saturday 16th December, classes held Fridays(After School Hours) and Saturdays. Fridays we had HTML/CSS and Saturdays were for Python programming. The Python classes were facilitated by world-class developers from Andela. The beneficiaries of the one-month training program are already on their way to becoming world-class developers, their joy and excitement almost palpable you can grab a fist of it. Below are some pictures from the one month training. And testimonials from some of our beneficiaries.
We Sincerely appreciate the support of our partners in making The Teens Code Conference and The One Month Python Training a huge success.
